WWHS - Skin Check Clinics Project

This project undertaken by the West Wimmera Health Service focused on exploring the feasibility of introducing a nurse-led skin cancer screening model in rural Victoria.

Agriculture is the predominate industry in the Wimmera region with most farm work being conducted outside, farmers and workers are the most exposed to the sun of all outdoor workers.

GICS awarded a Service Improvement Grant to staff at West Wimmera Health Service (WWHS) who anticipated that offering opportunities for regular skin checks may enable the detection of early stage disease leading to improved treatment outcomes and increased survival for those affected by skin cancer.

The project included having WWHS staff complete training to obtain the required qualifications to run skin check clinics at nine WWHS sites including Nhill, Kaniva, Goroke, Natimuk, Rainbow, Jeparit, Rupanyup, Minyip & Murtoa.

GICS are expecting a final report from the WWHS project team to be published in early 2025.

This project was also presented at our 2024 Annual Forum – watch the project overview video below.
