Mercy Health supportive care screening review and expansion for gynae-oncology patients

A NEMICS service improvement grant is supporting a review of supportive care screening (SCS) practices at the Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW) in Heidelberg, Melbourne.

Impact

MHW is now achieving an average weekly SCS completion rate of 87%. As the chemotherapy unit has been the main point for consistent data collection, data auditors are now observing SCS that have been completed on the ward prior to patients attending chemotherapy. This suggests the correct processes are being followed in the ward setting.

Outcome

MHW has identified the need to roll out SCS for patients attending outpatient clinics. Tools and processes used for the ward and chemotherapy unit can be replicated in this area. This initiative, led by the Clinical Nurse Specialist, will close the screening gap for patients referred to or leaving the ward environment prior to a diagnosis being made.

MHW is aware of a SCS tool that has been specifically developed for Indigenous populations, (SCNAT-IP). In the future MHW oncology CMC’s will liaise with the MHW Aboriginal Liaison Team with the aim of introducing this tool into the organisation.
