Co-designing Better Care: ePRO Symptom Monitoring for Immunotherapy
A WCMICS-funded project led by Dr Julia Lai-Kwon at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre has made strong progress in developing an electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) symptom monitoring system for people receiving immunotherapy. The project aims to support earlier detection and management of immune-related side effects by embedding symptom tracking into routine care via the Epic electronic medical record.
Since commencing in May 2023, the team has completed three co-design workshops with patients, carers, and clinicians, developed a prioritised list of 36 key symptoms, and built a prototype of the system.
This innovative work has attracted both national and international interest, and was recently recognised with the 2024 VCCC Picchi Award for Excellence in Cancer Research, awarded to Dr Lai-Kwon. The project highlights the power of co-design and digital health to improve safety, communication, and outcomes for people affected by cancer.
