Development of an outpatient venetoclax ramp-up pathway for patients with blood cancers
A NEMICS service improvement grant supported a project at Eastern Health to develop an outpatient pathway for escalating doses of venetoclax for patients with certain types of blood cancer.
This project aimed to develop a new Outpatient Venetoclax model of care, using the results of a comprehensive data analysis to support its need and safety.
Impact
A shift in the delivery of ventoclax from being largely inpatient based to being managed in the outpatient setting was inevitable due to a number of factors including increased pressure on the availability of inpatient beds, the desire to avoid unnecessary hospitalisation, and the need to improve cost-efficiency and patient experience. New enablers for implementation include, increased availability of specialised home cancer care nurses, good supportive care and mediations, and the development of Symptom and Urgent Review Clinics (SURC).
Outcome
As the data analysis and patient experience supported the development and implementation of an Outpatient Venetoclax Model of Care, this project has been recommended and approved as the new standard of care for eligible patients at Eastern Health.
