Design and implementation of an oral systemic anticancer treatment program in day oncology at Northern Health
Design and implementation of an oral systemic anticancer treatment program in day oncology at Northern Health
This project at Northern Health was supported by a NEMICS service improvement grant.
The aim of this project was to design and implement a nurse-led oral systemic anti-cancer therapy monitoring pathway to care for patients on high-risk anti-cancer therapies at Northern Health.
Impact
The project identified that the workflows and processes of the major stakeholder groups involved in the care of patients receiving cancer treatment via orally administered medicines were fragmented and inconsistent, had communication gaps, lack of clarity regarding role and responsibility, and inequity in supportive care provision. New workflows and processes to address identified service and communication gaps were developed. New roles were identified to implement the service and business cases prepared to support this.
Outcome
Business cases to support the implementation of project outcomes are being pursued. As an interim measure the implementation of a reduced scale pilot project for new patients commencing a specified list of anticancer oral medications will be trialled when resources permit.
