Exploring the Patient Population Profile of CALD People Affected by Cancer in Melbourne's Western Suburbs

Melbourne’s western and central suburbs are home to a significant and growing number of CALD communities.

These populations often face unique challenges in accessing healthcare, including language barriers, cultural differences, and socio-economic disparities. Despite these challenges, there is a lack of detailed data on the specific needs and health outcomes of CALD cancer patients in this region.

The primary aim of this project is to comprehensively understand the demographic, socio-economic, and health-related characteristics of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) people affected by cancer in Melbourne’s western suburbs. This information is critical to tailoring cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment programs to meet the unique needs of this population.

The project will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative research. Key components include:

  • data collection:
  • data analysis, and
  • community engagement

Based on the findings, the project will propose specific recommendations to improve cancer care for CALD populations.  By better understanding the unique challenges faced by these communities, we can improve health outcomes and equity in cancer care.
