Building capacity and expanding access to cancer clinical trials at Northern Health

Expanding access to clinical trials for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities is a critical step in improving health equity. With the support of a NEMICS service improvement grant, Northern Health undertook a project to understand the barriers and improve access to clinical trials.

The project team shared their findings regarding the barriers to clinical trial participation at Northern Health Research Week. View the poster.

Impact

By identifying the key barriers impacting upon cancer clinical trial participation for patients from CALD backgrounds, and addressing these barriers, a model-of-care was developed incorporating systems and supports to drive engagement and clinical trial participation among those patients.

Outcome

The Cancer Clinical Trials Unit have been able to build capacity to improve access for CALD patients to clinical trials through the co-design, development and implementation of a new recruitment model, translated patient information brochures, awareness campaigns and staff education.
