Anti-cancer drug administration course (ADAC) facilitation workshop
Anti-cancer drug administration course (ADAC) facilitation workshop
The anti-cancer drug administration course (ADAC) supports health professionals to develop the necessary knowledge and clinical skills to administer anti-cancer drugs and safely handle hazardous drugs and related waste. ADAC is the standard course undertaken by those who work with or could come into contact with chemotherapy drugs and hazardous waste. Facilitators are required to assess these learners at each service. A lack of facilitators was raised by numerous CDU’s.
GRICS and Gippsland Regional Education Coordinator Emma O’Neill collaborated to facilitate a workshop presented by Pippin Ellis and Genevieve Harvey, Oncology Educators from The Alfred. Offered to CDU NUMs to determine suitable staff and invite them to join the workshop, this standalone session was hosted at Century Inn, Traralgon due to central location for all services. In providing a central education session, several staff members from each of Gippsland CDU’s were able to attend, strengthening their services by providing adult education skills, problem solving and feedback skills. Growing facilitator skills enables each service to build workforce education and confidence.
Supporting facilitator training has led to improved adult education skills which benefits themselves, their colleagues and junior staff. These facilitators are now more confident in providing education and feedback for their colleagues.
Participants expressed gratitude for the networking opportunity, linking with other CDU staff, allowing for ongoing connection in which support and sharing of resources is likely.
Feedback from the group on the day included several of the same themes from all services. Gaining confidence to support their local staff and gaining skills on how to provide feedback was especially valuable. The opportunity to network with other services and understand that there are common barriers and challenges which also led to sharing of resources.
