HRICS Small Grants Program 2024
The Hume Regional Integrated Cancer Service (HRICS) Small Grants Program 2024
HRICS supported our three major regional oncology health services, enabling implementation of small-scale improvement initiatives using Redesign methodology. Within the Program, health services received leadership and mentoring support from the HRICS team, focusing on capacity building. This support assisted frontline health professionals to develop valuable skills in project methodology and management. Contributing to the overall goal of the program to foster sustainable improvements in healthcare practices, ensuring better service delivery and improved patient outcomes in oncology care across the region.
The range of impactful projects funded within our Small Grants Program 2024, included:
1. Albury Wodonga Health (AWH): Creation of two telehealth spaces to ensure privacy for clinicians and administrators conducting telehealth sessions and online meetings, improving remote care delivery.
2.Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW): Development of new procedure and equipment guidelines and the delivery of education to 29 palliative care, district nursing, and delivery staff on safely managing floor line hospital beds for end-of-life care.
3. Northeast Health Wangaratta: Scaling up the implementation of Survivorship Care Plans from a 2023 pilot project to include all tumour streams within the Cancer and Wellness Centre, ensuring comprehensive care for cancer survivors.
4.Northeast Health Wangaratta: Scoping a research project to assess the current state of treatment for acute radiation dermatitis and moist desquamation, focusing on standard treatment protocols in radiation and internal health services.
5. Goulburn Valley Health (GVH): Enhancement of oncology communication and education through the delivery of an onsite Showcase. This included education sessions, promotion of GVH’s oncology services, and stakeholder consultation on communication and referral processes. The event was attended by 26 clinicians, including district, palliative care, and urgent/acute care nurses from over ten community health services and organizations.
These above initiatives are advancing cancer care in our region by improving access and quality of care provided to patients, whilst fostering the professional development of healthcare staff. By addressing specific needs within each health service and supporting frontline professionals through capacity-building efforts, the HRICS Service Improvement Small Grants Program is contributing to more effective, sustainable oncology care.
