Australian Cancer Plan launched
In November 2023, the Australian Government launched the first Australian Cancer Plan to improve cancer outcomes, particularly for those groups whose health outcomes are poorer, over the next 10 years. Underpinning the plan are 6 strategic objectives, which identify where national focus and effort are best directed to deliver better outcomes for the next decade and beyond:
- Maximising cancer prevention and early detection
- Enhanced consumer experience
- World-class health systems for optimal care
- Strong and dynamic foundations
- Workforce to transform the delivery of cancer care
- Equity in cancer outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
To support implementation of this plan, the Australian Government also announced a $166 million Australian Cancer Nursing and Navigation Program to support more equitable access to cancer nurses, connect people with cancer to information and support relevant to their needs, deliver telehealth support services, and continue the Child and Youth Cancer Hub led by Canteen.
