THE BAY: a mentoring program from SMICS
BAY: build, apply, yield.
The BAY Program is a mentoring initiative from SMICS that provides a supportive, and structured environment where cancer care professionals from SMICS member health services can develop new skills, build confidence, and strengthen their professional networks.
BAY is an acronym:
- Build skills, professional networks and confidence through mentoring.
- Apply new knowledge and skills by designing, implementing and evaluating a workplace cancer service improvement project.
- Yield results that contribute to service improvement and better patient outcomes.
The BAY Program was created out of a desire to empower healthcare professionals to identify opportunities for local and system-level service improvement and to lead sustainable change.
By bringing together cancer care professionals to work on common challenges across SMICS member health services, the BAY Program will foster collaboration, learning and growth across southern Melbourne, benefiting our member health services and their patients.

Participants will develop practical project and change management skills, including project planning, stakeholder engagement, implementation, evaluation and reporting. These skills can be applied to future workplace initiatives and professional development opportunities.
The BAY program runs for 9 months. This timeline allows for education, project ideation, implementation and evaluation.
The BAY Program runs for approximately 9 months. Participants are expected to attend the SMICS office at Moorabbin Hospital one day per week during that time. Office attendance gives participants time to meet with their mentor and dedicate time to planning and delivering a project. Most program activities take place during business hours.
There is no direct cost to participants. However, as the BAY Program is delivered during business hours, participants will need the support and approval of their manager or business unit to take part.
Thank you for your interest. The BAY Program is not currently accepting applications while our current cohort works through the program. We will announce the next application round in mid-2027.
