Radiotherapy in childhood cancer: an introduction for nurses (e-learning module)
This resource has been developed by PICS, Victoria’s Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service.
As part of our professional development and education resources for health professionals, PICS has developed a series of e-learning modules with input from staff from The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, Monash Children’s Hospital, and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
This module is Radiotherapy in childhood cancer: an introduction for nurses. It will help learners to:
- Describe the principles of treatment and action of radiotherapy on the cell
- Explain the role of radiotherapy in childhood cancer
- Outline the radiotherapy planning process, including considerations applicable to children
- List the main techniques and technologies of radiotherapy delivered in children
- Explain potential acute side effects of radiotherapy
- Formulate and describe appropriate nursing interventions for managing acute side effects
- Identify how nurses can better support in caring for the child or adolescent receiving radiotherapy.
