Patient Experience Improvement Project

Supported by a GICS Grant, this project aimed to improve the patient experience within the Grampians Health, Ballarat, Chemotherapy Day Unit by streamlining their care and eliminating their time loss.

The project is associated with exploring the context and nature of the treatment of cancellations and pathology result delays through patient and staff interviews and available data.

This service improvement activity undertaken by by Inbal Ross (pictured above) used qualitative & quantitative data analysis to inform opportunities for service efficiency improvements in 3 phases:

  • Phase 1: Analysis of same day cancellation rate from the past six months was assessed to identified those which could have been predicted & to identify the common cancellation reasons.
  • Phase 2: Patient admission data collection (n=300) was used to determine if there were delays in treatment commencement. If yes, what led to treatment delay once they arrived in the unit? The data was discussed with the nursing and oncology team to identify areas of improvement.
  • Phase3: Patient interviews (n=100) to determine what they consider delays and how any delays identified impacted their lives. Mapping patient movement through our service. This phase is currently is in progress.

This project has been completed and the final report will be available in the near future.
