Nourish and Navigate: Improving Nutrition and Swallowing Support in Head and Neck Cancer Patients

Supported through the HRICS 2026 MK Memorial Grants Program, this project sought to develop a coordinated nutrition education and navigation model of care to ensure consistent and timely support for people with head and neck cancer. Through a comprehensive diagnostic phase, including stakeholder consultation, process and service mapping, and a review of the literature, including the Head and Neck Cancer Optimal Care Pathway, the project established a comprehensive understanding of the current state of outpatient allied health cancer services, specifically speech pathology and dietetics. The findings identified key barriers, service gaps, and opportunities for improvement, demonstrating that foundational service redesign was required before a new model of care could be implemented. The project has provided an evidence-based report, including recommendations to guide future redesign of outpatient allied health services and strengthen access to coordinated, patient-centred care.
