NEMICS Cancer Services Performance Indicators Report – Regional Overview

The Victorian cancer services performance indicators (CSPI) program measures and monitors member health service progress against the optimal care pathways, with a focus on multidisciplinary team meetings (MDMs) and care. The NEMICS CSPI report is now available and should be used by cancer services to inform quality improvement priorities and activities.

In 2025, an audit of cancer patient records examining MDM treatment plans, cancer staging, supportive care screening and GP communication found:

  • NEMICS member health services must continue to deliver MDM governance, quality monitoring and evaluation, and improvements in collaboration with the NEMICS program team
  • Three out of four health services and six out of eleven tumour streams met or exceeded the 85% performance target set by the Victorian Department of Health (DH) for documented evidence of MDM recommendations. Although a high proportion of cancer patients are presented at MDMs (in 2024, 16,132) for treatment planning across the NEMICS region, improvement is required by tumour streams to meet the set target.
  • No NEMICS member health service or tumour stream met the 85% target for evidence of cancer stage in the MDM recommendations, showing that limited cancer stage documentation is available in MDM treatment planning summaries. Concentrated effort will be required across the region to ensure all new cancer diagnoses include reporting of type and stage as per the Improving Cancer Outcomes (Diagnosis Reporting) Regulation 2025.
  • While all member health services and tumour streams continued to perform below the 80% target set by DH for the supportive care screening indicator, consistent or improved performance was noted for three out of four health services and across six out of eleven tumour streams.
  • Communication of initial treatment plans to GPs dropped in 2024, highlighting a possible important handover and process gap.
