Nasogastric Tube Insertion Pathway & Credentialling Framework for Oncology Nurses

Supported by a GICS Small Grant Program this project has established a streamlined, oncology-specific process for reactive Nasogastric Tube insertion at Grampians Health – Ballarat

This project, led by representatives from dietetics & nursing teams at Ballarat Austin Radiation Oncology Centre (BAROC) & Grampians Health, Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre (BRICC), has been a great example of collaboration between services to enhance patient experience.

The team worked together with the Oncology Nurse Practitioner, oncology educator, medical and radiation oncologists to streamline oncology-specific processes relating to reactive
Nasogastric Tube (NGT) insertion, including:

  • Development and enhancement of NGT policies and care plans specific to people with cancer
  • Education package development and education session delivery relating to NGT care and troubleshooting.

These improvements will greatly assist in reducing patient wait times for reactive NGT insertion and standardise care delivery.
