Improving access to Symptom Urgent Review Clinics (SURC)
People receiving cancer treatment can experience side effects that require timely advice and support. At Austin Health, Eastern Health and Northern Health, Symptom Urgent Review Clinics (SURCs) provide specialist nursing care to help patients manage treatment-related symptoms early, often preventing the need for an Emergency Department visit.
NEMICS is commencing this project to improve awareness of and access to SURC services for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.
Working with member health services, the project will develop clear and culturally appropriate information resources to improve awareness and understanding of SURC services. By providing culturally appropriate information in multiple languages, the project aims to support timely and appropriate use of SURCs and improve equitable access to cancer care.
The project responds to the findings of the recent CALD Communities VICS Optimal Care Summit, which highlighted opportunities to improve equitable access to cancer care. Recent findings have also shown that patients from CALD communities may be less aware of SURC services and are more likely to present to Emergency Departments following a cancer diagnosis.
