NEMICS Cancer Multidisciplinary Meeting Streamlining Report

Cancer Multidisciplinary Team Meetings (MDMs) are essential for planning individualised treatment and are embedded in key cancer care policies including the Optimal Care Pathways and Victorian Cancer Plan. Rising patient numbers and treatment complexity have increased pressure on MDM resources. One approach for managing the quality and efficiency of MDMs is streamlining: a process whereby complex cancer cases are prioritized for full discussion, while straightforward cases are expedited using protocolisation, such as Standards of Care (SoCs).

NEMICS has recently completed a rapid review of the evidence related to MDM streamlining. The report provides an overview of documented streamlining processes and SoCs, with the aim of supporting improvement initiatives that address the growing demand on multidisciplinary meetings. It also includes a set of recommendations to guide further investigation into the appropriateness of streamlining activities across Victorian MDMs and to build a more comprehensive understanding of current practices.
