Guiding strong solutions for culturally safe cancer care

SMICS has partnered with the Weenthunga Health Network to lead the Walking Alongside Mob with Cancer Project, an initiative designed to strengthen cultural safety, accountability, and system coordination in cancer care for First Nations peoples across the southern Melbourne region.

The project embeds relational governance, anti-racism, and First Nations leadership within cancer service design and delivery.

Project aims:

  • Implementation of the Victorian Aboriginal Cancer Journy Strategy (VACJS) maturity assessment to measure cultural safety and accountability
  • Strengthened relationships between health services and First Nations communities
  • Increased cultural safety capability within cancer service clinical workforces
  • Establishment of First Nations-led governance structures
  • Mapping of local services, referral pathways, and system gaps
  • Development of a First Nations Cancer Patient Journey Guide, adaptable to local contexts
  • Potential reduction of colonial load on First Nations health staff
  • Creation of a blueprint for coordinated cancer care improvement across the southern Melbourne region.

The Walking Alongside Mob with Cancer Project supports pillar one of the Victorian Cancer Plan 2024-2028.
