VICS work presented at the MASCC/ISOO 2026 Annual Meeting

The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and the International Society of Oral Oncology (ISOO) held their 2026 MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting on 25–27 June in Melbourne.

Work led or supported by the VICS was showcased in 12 'e-posters' – each available throughout the conference and spoken to in 3-minute oral presentations by the authors: 

  • 10-month quality improvement pilot using the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Practical Geriatric Assessment for newly diagnosed gastrointestinal cancer patients aged ≥65 years who are considered for systemic therapy.
  • Frailty Informed Treatment (FIT) aims to capture the vulnerability of older patients, inform treatment decisions, and improve supportive care and outcomes.

  • BSWRICS worked with St John of God Warrnambool Hospital and Icon to analyse participation in oncology rehabilitation programs at 5 sites in southwestern Victoria.
  • Less than 6% of cancer patients were found to have attended rehabilitation.

  • GRICS investigated how quickly patients with upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancer were referred to malnutrition screening and dietitians at Latrobe Regional Health.
  • Out of 36 patient files audited, only 2 (8%) showed evidence of completing the malnutrition screening tool within 14 days of diagnosis.

  • SMICS and Monash Health digitalised the paper-based validated National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Distress Thermometer to improve screening, streamline workflows, and enhance nursing confidence in supportive care delivery.
  • 88% of staff found the digital version easier to use than the paper-based original.

  • In a retrospective audit of patient files from a 2024 audit of patient-identified needs, NEMICS examined all completed supportive care screenings documented from 2022 onward to understand what follow-up actions are identified in supportive care screening activities across their member health services and to identify opportunities to enhance processes related to addressing patients’ supportive care needs.

  • HRICS’ Comprehensive Cancer Care Project at Ramsay Health Shepparton aims to strengthen supportive and survivorship care by embedding routine, standardised supportive care screening within the Day Oncology Unit.

  • The Victorian Cancer Malnutrition Collaborative (including WCMICS) conducted a multi-site point prevalence study over 4 weeks across 24 public and private Victorian acute health services (35 sites).
  • Overall, 93% of patients were food secure. Of the 147 patients experiencing food insecurity, just over half (52%, n=77) were experiencing marginal food insecurity.

  • The VICS Supportive Care Working Group developed a self-assessment tool and used it to survey 45 Victorian health services across 7 Integrated Cancer Service (ICS) areas.

  • WCMICS funded and supported the codesign, development and evaluation of an evidence-based online toolkit for use in developing and implementing prehabilitation services for patients undergoing major upper and lower gastrointestinal and gynaecological cancer surgery.
