Using Data to Inform Cancer Service Improvement Across Victoria

The Victorian Integrated Cancer Services (VICS) Information Management Group (IMG) Day recently brought together cancer data leads from across the VICS network to share innovative approaches to data, reporting, evaluation and service improvement. Data and Insights Lead, Kashif Sheikh represented GRICS at this invaluable workshop.

The event provided an opportunity for the team to showcase projects, exchange knowledge and explore emerging priorities in cancer data and reporting. Presentations highlighted a range of initiatives focused on clinical governance, cancer care quality monitoring, service planning, reporting excellence and priority population analysis.

The team explored how high-quality data can support evidence-based decision making, inform service planning and drive improvements in cancer care across Victoria.
A key theme throughout the day was the importance of collaboration, strong data governance and consistent reporting practices to ensure meaningful analysis and support continuous cancer service improvement.

Several priorities for future collaborative work were identified, including:

  • Progressing statewide standardisation of Cancer Service Performance Indicator reporting
  • Strengthening analysis of culturally and linguistically diverse communities and other priority populations
  • Enhancing stakeholder engagement through improved data services and reporting
  • Aligning future initiatives with the VICS strategic pillars of Equity, Optimal Care, and Wellbeing & Support.

The IMG Day highlighted the value of collaboration across Victoria’s cancer services and reinforced the important role data plays in improving access, quality and outcomes for people affected by cancer. By sharing expertise, learning from innovative practices and working collectively to strengthen information management capabilities, the VICS network continues to support data-driven approaches that improve cancer care for Victorian communities.
