SMICS welcomes the first cohort of mentees to The BAY Program

In August, the Southern Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service (SMICS) welcomed five mentees to The BAY Program, a new structured mentoring initiative developed by SMICS to strengthen workforce capability in project and change management while delivering priority quality improvement outcomes across southern Melbourne.

The BAY Program, an acronym for Build, Apply, Yield, provides a safe, supportive, and structured environment where cancer care professionals from SMICS member health services can develop new skills, build confidence, and strengthen their professional networks.

SMICS Program Director Seleena Sherwell said, ‘The BAY Program was created out of a desire to empower healthcare professionals to identify opportunities for local and system-level service improvement and to lead sustainable change. We are excited to welcome our inaugural group of mentees.’

She went on to say, ‘By bringing together cancer care professionals to work on common challenges across SMICS member health services, the BAY Program will foster collaboration, learning and growth across southern Melbourne, benefiting our member health services and their patients.’

Over the next nine months, BAY mentees will be supported through a structured program that provides training and support in project and change management while they lead their own service improvement projects focused on improving compliance with legislated reporting of cancer stage to the Victorian Cancer Registry (VCR).
