Next phase begins for VICS MDM quality tools and processes project
A statewide initiative from the Victorian Integrated Cancer Services (VICS) to co‑design tools and processes that strengthen the quality and consistency of multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs) across Victoria has just entered phase two.
MDM quality tools and processes project update
The MDM quality tools and processes project – which forms part of the broader MDM quality program from the VICS – aims to address increasing pressure on cancer services caused by rising patient volumes, limited resources and constrained funding.
Phase one of the project involved engaging members of 28 MDMs across three tumour streams (colorectal, lung and haematology) at 15 health services across Victoria in a focused assessment activity.
Over a two‑month period, 73 clinicians, administrators and health professionals shared their experiences of MDMs, including:
- improvements already made based on recommendations from the 2019 MDM Quality Audit
- what is currently working well in practice
- ongoing challenges for MDMs within their health services.
Phase two of the project is now underway.
This phase involves analysing data gathered during the focused assessments to inform the development of practical, clinician-led tools, processes, and improvements.
The MDM quality tools and processes project is being led by a project team from SMICS and HRICS, with support and guidance from a working group and governance group made up of professionals from across the VICS.
The MDM quality tools and processes project forms part of the VICS statewide MDM Program.
Phase two of this project is estimated to be completed in May 2026.
We will continue to share updates on this project as it progresses.
About our statewide MDM program
The MDM quality tools and processes project is the first of several initiatives under the VICS Multidisciplinary Meeting (MDM) Quality Program.
This program is a key piece of work for the VICS, designed to support the quality and efficiency of cancer MDMs and ultimately improve outcomes for Victorians affected by cancer.
The Program aims to:
- develop a monitoring tool for health services to evaluate and improve the quality of their MDMs
- share examples of good practice to support learning and consistency across Victoria
- identify quality‑based solutions suitable for health services of all sizes
- determine where and how each Integrated Cancer Service can support improvements
The MDM Quality Program supports pillar three of the Victorian Cancer Plan and will contribute to improving equity in access, care and outcomes, ensuring optimal wellbeing for Victorians affected by cancer.
