Delivering Better Cancer Care Through Collaboration and Innovation
GICS have developed a one-page document to highlight key initiatives undertaken throughout 2025-26 ‘At a Glance’. GICS continued to drive meaningful improvements in cancer care across the Grampians region, delivering initiatives aligned with the Victorian Cancer Plan 2024-28. By bringing together clinicians, health services, primary care providers, consumers and community partners, GICS strengthened access to timely, high-quality and person-centred cancer care.
Key achievements included supporting the Colonoscopy Access Project across 82.5% of Victoria, with local improvement initiatives reducing referral-to-waitlisting times by 23 days, introducing new surveillance guidelines, piloting an Endoscopy Nurse Navigator model, and increasing utilisation of the National Cancer Screening Register by 25% among participating regional practices.
GICS also expanded supportive and survivorship care through the launch of the St John of God – Ballarat, Survivorship Clinic pilot and the implementation of patient-reported measures at three clinical sites, ensuring patient goals, values and experiences are better integrated into treatment decisions. Insights from the Grampians Lived and Living Patient Experience Study generated eight recommendations to inform future service improvements and strengthen consumer partnerships in care.
Significant progress was made in early detection and coordinated care through local implementation of the National Lung Cancer Screening Program and establishment of the Grampians Lung Nodule Clinic. Workforce development was supported through professional development grants for 23 clinicians and educational events that enhanced cancer care knowledge and capability across the region.
Together, these achievements demonstrate examples of our commitment to improving cancer outcomes through innovative models of care, workforce development, consumer-centred service design and strengthened access across the cancer pathway, advancing the goals of the Victorian Cancer Plan.
