Expansion of Frank Minchton Centre, Colac Area Health
Future of cancer care secured in Colac with the expansion of the Frank Minchinton Centre
The Frank Minchinton Centre (FMC) at Colac Area Health has strengthened its commitment to the local community with the addition of two new treatment chairs, expanding capacity from four to six.
Opened in 2016, the FMC has provided accessible, high quality cancer care for the Colac community. The expansion ensures more patients can receive treatment closer to home, reducing the need for travel and supporting families during what is often a challenging time.
The demand for cancer services is growing. The Cancer Council projects more than 4.56 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed in Australia between 2020 and 2044, placing increasing pressure on the health system.
- Almost one in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.
- In 2024, approximately 20,000 people under 50 are expected to receive a cancer diagnosis.
- Cancer remains a leading cause of death, with three in ten deaths in 2024 estimated to be attributable to the disease.
FMC Clinical Nurse Consultant, Sara Hay, said the expansion at Colac Area Health reflects a strong commitment to future proofing cancer care in the region.
“The addition of two new treatment chairs is an investment in the health and wellbeing of our community. This ensures local people can access quality cancer treatment here in Colac, close to their support networks.
The FMC’s growth marks a significant step forward in meeting the rising demand for cancer services while continuing to deliver patient centred, compassionate care in Colac.
